What SEO Training Should Actually Cover in 2026

What SEO Training Should Actually Cover in 2026

SEO training has a quality problem: much of what is taught would have been outdated in 2019, never mind 2026. If you are considering SEO training in Perth for yourself or your team, this is what the curriculum should actually cover, and the warning signs it will not be worth the day.

The six things that belong in the curriculum

1. Keyword research mapped to pages

Not a spreadsheet of search volumes, but a decision: which page answers which search, and which searches deserve a page at all. The output should be a keyword map for your own site, not someone else’s example.

2. On-page fundamentals

Titles, headings, internal links and schema, taught as a checklist your team can run on every new page. This is the least glamorous and highest-return hour of the day.

3. Content that ranks and converts

How to brief, structure and write pages that read naturally and still rank: one clear answer up front, headed sections a reader can scan, and proof a sceptic would accept.

4. Local SEO

For Perth businesses this is often the fastest win: Google Business Profile done properly, reviews with a system behind them, and location pages that deserve to exist.

5. Measurement

Search Console and GA4, read well enough to make decisions: which queries are close to page one, which pages earn clicks, and what changed after the work shipped. Rankings without measurement is astrology.

6. The AI search shift

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI results now answer many questions before anyone clicks. The training should cover how those systems pick their sources, and how structured data, FAQs and genuinely direct answers earn citations. We cover the background in how AI search is reshaping the way customers find you.

Warning signs of outdated training

  • Keyword density targets. A relic; writing for a percentage produces pages nobody wants to cite.
  • Generic demo sites. If the training does not run on your own website and Search Console data, retention drops to whatever the notes capture.
  • Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. Training can guarantee capability, not positions.
  • No mention of AI search. The biggest change to search behaviour in a decade should not be a footnote.

What your team should leave with

  • A keyword map for your own site
  • An on-page checklist the team runs on every new page
  • A weekly and monthly SEO routine, documented
  • Fixes already shipped during the session itself

Common questions

How long does it take to learn SEO?

The fundamentals take a day of focused training; fluency takes months of applying them. A half-day or full-day session on your own website covers keyword research, on-page work, local SEO and measurement well enough to run a weekly routine. The compounding comes from doing that routine consistently.

Do I need technical skills to learn SEO?

No. Most of the SEO that moves a small business sits in content, page structure, local signals and measurement, all teachable in plain language. Genuinely technical work such as site speed or migrations is worth leaving with a specialist, and good training tells you where that line is.

Is SEO still worth learning now that AI answers questions directly?

Yes, because AI assistants and Google’s AI results still choose which businesses to cite, and they choose from the same signals SEO builds: clear pages, structured data, local credibility and genuinely useful answers. Training that ignores AI search is training for 2019.

What should I bring to SEO training?

Access to your own website, Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Training on your own data is the whole point: the examples are your actual rankings, and fixes can ship during the session.
