Does AI Recommend Your Business? AI Search Explained for Perth Businesses

Does AI Recommend Your Business? AI Search Explained for Perth Businesses

A growing share of your customers no longer scroll through ten blue links. They ask Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot a question and read a single composed answer. When that question is “who should I call for this in Perth”, the AI names a handful of businesses. Either you are one of them or you are invisible, and most owners have never checked which one they are.

What AI search actually is

AI search is the umbrella term for answers assembled by an AI assistant rather than listed by a search engine. It covers the AI Overviews and AI Mode you now see at the top of Google, and the answers given by assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Instead of ranking pages, these systems read sources they trust and compose one answer, often naming specific businesses, with a short reason why.

Optimising for this is called AI search optimisation, and you will also see it called generative engine optimisation or GEO. It overlaps with SEO but it is not the same job. SEO earns you a position on a results page. AI search optimisation earns you a mention inside the answer itself.

How AI decides who to recommend

No one outside these companies knows the recipe exactly, but the pattern across answers is consistent. AI assistants tend to lean on:

  • Google Business Profile and Maps data, especially for Gemini and AI Overviews: your rating, review count, categories and what reviewers actually say.
  • The Bing index, which feeds ChatGPT and Copilot. A business that has ignored Bing can be strong on Google and weak in ChatGPT.
  • Reviews and review platforms, read for substance, not just the star number.
  • Directories and “best in Perth” style roundups, which the assistants quote when composing shortlists.
  • Your own website’s content, when it answers questions directly and marks them up properly. Pages written as clear answers get lifted into AI responses far more often than brochure pages.

Notice what is missing from that list: advertising. You cannot currently buy your way into the organic part of these answers, which is why the groundwork matters.

How to check what AI says about you

You can run a rough version of our audit yourself in ten minutes:

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot the questions your customers would ask. Not your business name, but “best [your service] in Perth”, “who should I use for [problem] in Perth”, “is [your business] any good”.
  2. Vary the wording and ask more than once. These systems do not give the same answer every time.
  3. Note who gets named, and why. The reasons the AI gives are a map of what it values in your category.
  4. Ask it directly what it knows about your business. Wrong phone numbers, old addresses and outdated services show you exactly which sources need fixing.

If competitors keep appearing and you do not, the answer is almost never bad luck. It is that the sources the AI trusts have more to say about them than about you.

What to do about it

The work splits into four areas, and none of it is exotic:

  • Get your data consistent. Same name, address and phone everywhere: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, the directories, your own website. Conflicting data makes an AI hedge, and a hedging AI leaves you out.
  • Build genuine reviews. A steady flow of detailed reviews, replied to, gives the assistants material to quote. One burst of five-star ratings with no text gives them nothing.
  • Publish answer-shaped content. Pages that ask the real question and answer it plainly, with FAQ markup, are the pages AI answers borrow from.
  • Earn third-party mentions. Agency directories, industry roundups and local press are disproportionately quoted when an AI composes a shortlist.

This is patient work, which is exactly why it is defensible. A competitor cannot catch up with a week of effort.

Where to start

We run a free AI Visibility Audit for Perth businesses: we check what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI actually say about you and your competitors, trace which sources are feeding those answers, and give you the findings straight. From there, our AI search optimisation service does the ongoing work, alongside the SEO that still drives the classic results. The work is done by our in-house specialist team, led by the founder, on month to month terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

They overlap but do different jobs. SEO earns positions on a search results page. AI search optimisation earns mentions inside AI-composed answers, which lean heavily on reviews, consistent business data, third-party mentions and answer-shaped content. Good SEO helps AI visibility, but it does not guarantee it.

How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business?

Ask it the questions a customer would ask, such as “best [your service] in Perth”, several times and in different wording. Then ask what it knows about your business specifically. Note who gets named, the reasons given, and any wrong details about you. That is the quick version of the audit we run.

Can you pay to appear in AI answers?

Not in the organic part of the answer. Some platforms are experimenting with ads around AI results, but the businesses named inside the answer are chosen from sources the AI trusts, so the way in is reviews, consistent data, content and mentions rather than a media budget.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It depends on your starting point. Fixing wrong business data can change what assistants say within weeks, because they re-read their sources. Building the review base and third-party mentions that earn a place in “best of” answers is a months-long effort, which is why starting before your competitors matters.
